Perm Rods on Natural Hair

Fall is here and the weather is getting colder and colder. If you know me, you know I love my wash and go's, but I have a new go to hairstyle... the Perm Rod Set! Yes, if you haven't tried it you definitely should. Perm Rod season is in full effect and it's a great hairstyle for naturals to rock this Fall and Winter.

If you're unfamiliar with perm rods there are different sizes you can choose from to create whatever size curl you want on your hair. I prefer medium sized curls whenever my hair is styled in a perm rod set. The medium sized curls usually last 2 weeks before I wash my hair. Honestly, the style could last longer but I usually don't go over 2 weeks without washing my hair.

Recently, I got a perm rod set done by my hairstylist Fawnne at Salon Noa in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Let me tell you, my curls are poppin! Fawnne used Influance Hair Care styling foam to set my hair and the results are amazing. I was pleasantly surprised by the results and I really liked how Influance Hair Care styling foam left my hair soft and shiny.

Perm rod sets have been a trend for a while in the natural hair community and you will be seeing me rocking it more. What I like most about having a perm rod set, is the ability to easily style my hair. You can style your hair in an up-do or wear it down, you still have the ability to be creative with different hairstyles.

I'm going to continue to experiment with perm rods, especially this fall and winter season. I can't wait try the different sized perm rods that are available at any hair store such as, Sally's. If you haven't used perm rods in your hair continue to stay tuned. I will be sharing more of my perm rod results along with my personal thoughts and pictures using different sized perm rods on my hair. If you have experimented with perm rods I would love to hear your experience. Stay tuned for more!

5 Ways to grow healthy hair

Hey Y'all! I'm so excited to share with you 5 ways to grow healthy hair. I get asked on a daily bases how my hair grew so fast. It's amazing when I pull down a curl strand or even straighten my hair how many people ask how my hair grew so quickly or if my hair is a weave. Growing healthy hair is very simple, so lets take a look at these 5 ways to grow healthy hair.

1. Clean scalp- In order for you to grow healthy hair, it's imperative to keep a clean scalp. Not only will build up from products cause dandruff, it can also cause yeast on your scalp, these two factors can suffocate your scalp which will prevent your hair from growing. Using a clarifying shampoo will wash away build up and any unwanted debris. Sometimes I use an apple cider vinegar rinse to clean my scalp, it may sound nasty but it works wonders, just make sure you immediately condition your hair to prevent dryness. Remember, plants need water to grow and we need (healthy) food to eat in order for us to maintain a healthy lifestyle the same rules apply with growing healthy hair.

2. Deep Conditioning- The benefits of regularly using deep conditioners on your hair provides moisture, elasticity, and add body to your hair, this enhances growth and leads to healthy hair. I deep condition both my daughter and I's hair once a week, I let the conditioner sit in our hair for 30 minutes and rinse it out. One of my favorite deep conditioners is Aussie 3 minute miracle; it leaves our hair soft and moist. If you don't deep condition your hair once a week, I would suggest trying it for a while you will find positive results.

3. Protein Treatments- I found that giving my hair a monthly protein treatment helped enhance the growth in my hair. Protein treatments strengthens and temporarily repairs your hair. Whenever I straighten my hair, I immediately apply Palmers Deep Conditioning Protein pack in my hair for 30 minutes on my washday. A protein treatment delivers vitamins and replenishes your hair shaft with the necessary oils needed.

4. Low Manipulation- This is my best friend, as hard as it may sound you must leave your hair alone. I rarely touch my hair, I must admit when my hair first started growing after my big chop my hands were in my hair constantly. I found that low manipulation is just as important as the other tips mentioned. Reducing the excessing combing, brushing, and styling enhance your chances of growing healthy hair. By cutting the amount of tension on your hair you can reduce the chances of breakage. Protective styles and wrapping your hair in a pineapple at night are just two different hair care regimens for low manipulation.

5. Hair Trims- Split ends are your worst enemy and trimming your hair is a necessity. As soon as you see your ends looking raggedy, splitting, knotting, or sticking to your clothes it's time to see your hairstylist. Trimming your ends helps reduce breakage due to split ends and reduces hair breakage. I pay very close attention to my hair during washdays so I usually get my hair trimmed every 3-6 months. My stylist at Salon Noa in Virginia Beach, VA carefully preps my hair, deep conditions and uses a technique to ensure my hair receives a limited amount of heat as possible before and after trimming my hair.

Growing healthy hair is very easy; just remember it's not going to grow at overnight. Patience is definitely necessary but if you follow these 5 tips, you will get the great results. Be sure to track your progress with pictures, I noticed when I tracked my growth with pictures I saw my hair growth over time. I hope these tips helped clarify any questions you needed! Remember, to stay Phresh, Be You and Be Great.

A successful Twist Out using Curly Q's

*This post is sponsored by Curly Qs. All thoughts and opinions are my own.*

A twist out is a great hairstyle for kids, especially little girls. I love to style my daughter Jaiden’s hair in a twist out because I can style her hair in many different ways without a lot of tension. It’s a perfect protective hairstyle that can last for days at a time. My go to hair product for Jaiden’s hair is Curls Curly Q’s curl care for kids. Curls is a great hair product because the ingredients are natural and organic, this ensures that she will get the nourishment needed for her hair to be healthy and long. The steps needed to have a successful twist out using Curls Curly Q’s for kids are as followed:

First, you want to cleanse your child’s hair by using Curls sulfate free shampoo called Curlie Cutie Cleansing Cream that gently cleanses your mini me’s hair. This shampoo provides a nice lather and is infused with Carrot seed oil, Horse Chestnut, Sage Leaf and Arnica Montana Flower Extract. I used this shampoo on Jaiden’s hair and it left her 4a hair feeling soft and it thoroughly cleansed her hair in one wash.

A great follow up to Curlie Cutie Cleansing Cream is the Coconut Dream Conditioner; it’s great for detangling and rehydrating you child’s hair. Also, you can use this conditioner as a co-wash, this will help keep your child’s hair moisturized and strengthen his or her hair shaft. If you’re not familiar with Co-washing here are the simple steps. When I co-wash Jaiden’s hair I first, rinse her hair with warm water and apply the Coconut Dream Conditioner. After I apply the conditioner, I gently massage her scalp and hair with my hands. Then, I section her hair while the conditioner is still in her hair and either finger detangle or comb her hair with a wide toothcomb. Lastly, I rinse her hair out with cold water to minimize frizz in order to close her hair cuticles to seal in the moisture from the conditioner.

After, completing these two steps you can you use a moisturizer and detangler from the Curly Q’s brand. I applied the Curly Q Milkshake on Jaiden’s hair to further moisturize her hair. This product is a lightweight hair lotion made with organic Aloe leaf juice and pure coconut. I noticed that my daughter’s hair remained tangle free and immediately softened as I raked the product in her hair. What’s so amazing about this product is its doesn’t weigh your child’s hair down and it smells good. Then, I follow up with Curly Q Gel-les’c (Jealousy) a curl gel/shine serum to tame any frizz and add more shine to Jaiden’s hair. This gel is very lightweight and it holds curls in place without having a hard coating leaving Jaiden’s hair soft.

When I switched my child’s hair products I noticed the overall growth and health of her hair. It was very difficult for me to find a product and simple hairstyle that can successfully work for her hair type. Curly Q’s has provided quality ingredients that meet the needs of my child’s coarse hair. Also, it has made styling easy for me so that Jaiden has a successful twist out that remains moist throughout the week. Overall, I would personally recommend Curly Q’s to any and everyone for the overall health of your child’s hair and allow you to make hairstyle such as a twist out easy and successful.

How to do Finger Coils on natural hair

Are you struggling with styling your hair? I know, I know, you're getting frustrated! Nothing seems to work. Before you decide to throw in the towel and go back to creamy crack, let me help you achieve a beautiful finger coil.

STEP 1.

First, section your hair. This will help prevent your hair from getting tangled and it is also more manageable.

Step 2.

Take a portion of hair from the section you're working on and add your desired hair product (I styled my hair with Taliah Waajid's Curly Curl "Gello" and Protective Mist Bodifier).

STEP 3.

Wrapped your hair tightly around your finger in a circular motion.

STEP 4.

Pinch your hair halfway down to hold the coil and repeat step 3. If you have short hair skip this step and go to step 5.

STEP 5.

Seal your ends! I personally added Spectrum Organic Virgin Unrefined Coconut Oil.

If you are new or have been natural for some time now you may or may not know that water is your best friend. Water is essential to everyday life and it is needed to maintain healthy hair. We all know that water is vital to our organs, it helps plants and food grow and it also helps your hair grow. Here are 5 reasons water benefits healthy hair:

1.     Water hydrates your hair by daily adding water or a water based hair product i.e: leave-in conditioner to your hair, it will help prevent dry brittle hair which leads to breakage.

2.     Water helps your body flush out toxins. Drinking a gallon of water a day you will begin to see an improvement in: hair growth, changes in your body i.e.: (clearer skin, and nail growth), and you'll be more energized.

3.     Water regulates your cardiovascular system also called circulatory system. Your circulatory system transports water, blood, and nutrients to your blood cells and also carries away the waste that your body produces.

4.     If you are neglecting your water intake it could potentially lead to hair thinning, shedding, and hair breakage.

5.     Washing your hair with warm water helps remove buildup and dirt; while cold water closes your hair follicles so your hair shaft can remain strong.  I personally see benefits in washing my hair with warm water and I rinse the conditioner out with cold water.

I could go on and on about the benefits of water but I will leave you with these five tips. Make sure you drink enough water today! Your body will thank you later!

Your ends are the oldest part of your hair. You have to make sure you maintain it and trim it as needed. Some stylist say to trim every 4-6 weeks, but as you learn your hair you could possibly extend trimming your hair.

5.     Sulfate free shampoo-

Does not contain harmful chemicals! It allows your hair to maintain it's natural oils and helps retain moisture. This shampoo also benefits people with sensitive scalps and reduces dryness in your hair.
